10 basic things for improving your personal branding on Twitter
- Be the real YOU - Always be yourself, real, human, honest, helpful, and give more than you get.
- Include a real name – Your name is you personal brand! Don’t use some silly usernames. People want to know who they are talking to. Let them know who you are if you care about your personal brand!
- Add a picture profile - Instead of using the Twitter default icon or some funny pictures, be professional and opt for a real picture of you. People want to see your real face.
- Make the most of the "Bio" - Use it as a mini resume. Say who you are, what you do and express your interests. Be descriptive and specific.
- Encourage visits to your website - Add your blog or site URL in the Web field so people can know more about you. By doing so you will also increase the traffic to your website. If you don’t have a site, add your LinkedIn profile URL.
- Set your location - It’s a good way to meet and get in touch with tweeps from your area.
- Brand your Twitter background - Brand yourself by creating your very own background image. Check out these Twitter backgrounds resources:
- Don’t protect your updates – How do you want to meet new people and promote yourself if you don’t share your updates with the whole Twittersphere.
- Make new friends - Listen to people talking about your subjects, with similar interests, passionate about your industry... and follow them. Find new tweeps using Mr. Tweet, TweepSearch, Twellow, Twitter Search
- Contribute to the conversation and provide something of value - Define yourself through your tweets. When you tweet, you are not just sharing information but you are building your identity. Your followers are defining who you are based on what you are tweeting about. On Twitter, you are what you tweet! So tweet useful information and share relevant links and visuals. Also, ask and answer questions using the @replies. And don’t forgot to leave room in your tweets so people can RT and add their reaction – 120 is the new 140!
Note: Be consistent -Try to keep the same identity (name, picture, bio...) across all social media platforms so people can remember you more easily.
